8 Workers from Afghanistan Killed in Coal Mine Explosion in Tajikistan

Local sources in Daykundi province have confirmed that eight residents of this province lost their lives in a coal mine explosion in Sughd province, Tajikistan.

According to a local source, the incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Friday, May 9, at a coal mine in Ayni district, northern Tajikistan. The cause of the explosion was reported to be a buildup of gas inside the mine.

Local sources in Daykundi stated that five of the victims were from Shahristan district, two from Miramor district, and one from Ashtarlay district. One of the victims was identified as Kazem Beigi, a graduate of Kabul Polytechnic University.

According to the victims’ relatives, the workers had been sent to Tajikistan by a contracting company to work in the mine. So far, Tajik authorities and media have not commented on the incident.

Afghan workers often labor in hazardous areas in many countries without proper safety equipment.
