Taliban Flog a Man and a Woman in Baghlan
The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that a man and a woman were publicly flogged in Baghlan province on charges of “illicit relations.”
According to a statement released by the court today (Tuesday, April 22), the two individuals were each sentenced to 35 lashes and six months of imprisonment, as per the verdict of the Baghlan city primary court.
The statement also mentioned that the sentence was carried out in the presence of local Taliban officials and several residents of the area.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the group has repeatedly carried out public floggings and has publicly executed at least ten other individuals. These actions have drawn strong condemnation from international human rights organizations.
These organizations consider corporal punishment and executions to be a clear violation of human dignity and contrary to international law, and have called for their immediate cessation.
