The Taliban have whipped seven individuals in three provinces

The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced the implementation of the punishment of whipping on seven people in the provinces of Kabul, Takhar, and Nangarhar in public. The court stated today, Sunday, March 2, that these individuals were punished for charges such as “drug production and consumption,” “adultery,” and “sodomy.”

In one statement, the court mentioned that an individual in Kabul was sentenced to 39 lashes in public on Saturday, March 1, for producing and consuming drugs. According to the statement, the Taliban’s primary court on drug prevention not only sentenced him to the public whipping but also imposed a two-year prison sentence.

Another statement from the court reports the punishment of three individuals in Chah Ab district of Takhar province on Thursday, February 27, for the crime of “adultery.” The statement adds that each of them received 39 lashes, and two were sentenced to six months in prison, while one received a one-year sentence.

Additionally, a third statement reveals that three men in Spin Ghar district of Nangarhar were whipped with 39 lashes on Wednesday, February 26, for the crime of “sodomy.” The statement further indicates that in addition to the lashes, these individuals were sentenced to one to two years of imprisonment.

Human rights organizations consider the execution of corporal punishments, including whipping and public executions, as a clear violation of international laws and human dignity and have called for an immediate halt to such actions. Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, there have been dozens of public punishments, including whipping, and at least six executions.
