Taliban Flog Five People in Ghazni and Urozgan Provinces

The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that five people have been flogged in Ghazni and Urozgan provinces for various offenses, including extramarital relations, murder, and sodomy.

In a statement issued today, Monday, February 10, the court stated that two people in Ghazni province were sentenced to three years and six months in prison and 39 lashes each for having extramarital relations. Additionally, three other individuals in Urozgan province were punished for crimes including murder, sodomy, and extramarital relations. One of them received a one-year prison sentence and 39 lashes, another was sentenced to one year and six months in prison and 30 lashes, and the third received a six-month prison sentence and 39 lashes.

These actions come as the Taliban, after taking control of Afghanistan, have implemented strict laws based on their specific interpretation of Islamic Sharia. However, the Taliban’s judicial methods and harsh punishments, including flogging and public executions, have faced widespread criticism from the international community and human rights organizations.

Human rights groups have warned that such actions not only violate the basic rights of citizens but may also lead to increased violence and injustice in society. Despite this, the Taliban continues to insist on enforcing their laws and considers such trials to be a part of their judicial process.
