The Taliban flogged a man in Takhar
The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that a man in the Darqad district of Takhar province was subjected to a flogging sentence.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 23, the court said that the individual was sentenced to 39 lashes and five years in prison for the alleged “extra-marital relationship.”
Since returning to power, the Taliban have carried out hundreds of flogging punishments and six executions in public spaces. This practice reflects the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic law, which has faced widespread criticism from human rights organizations and the international community.
Human rights organizations have condemned these punishments as gross violations of international law and contrary to human dignity, repeatedly calling for them to be stopped.
