Taliban Flog 12 People in Nimroz and Bamiyan
The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced in an official statement that the flogging punishment for 11 people in Nimroz province and one person in Bamiyan province was carried out in public.
The court stated today, Sunday, February 16, that in Nimroz province, four individuals were flogged for “theft and looting” and “illegal relationships,” and seven others were flogged for “theft” in a public sports stadium.
According to the Supreme Court’s statement, these individuals received between 20 and 39 lashes, and in addition, they were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to six years.
Meanwhile, another statement from the court reported the physical punishment of a woman in Bamiyan province. The statement mentioned that a woman, accused of “escaping from home,” was flogged 39 times in public on Thursday, February 13, in the district of Yakawlang Number One. In addition to the flogging, she was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
Since returning to power, the Taliban have, in addition to physical punishments, executed six people in front of hundreds of spectators.
Human rights organizations and international bodies have repeatedly condemned the implementation of physical punishments, including flogging and public executions, as violations of international law and human dignity, calling for an end to such punishments.
