Floods in northern Afghanistan killed 300 people and destroyed hundreds of residential homes

.Due to the overflow of floods in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan and neighboring provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan, more than 300 people have been killed and hundreds of residential homes have been destroyed.

 

The World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan has reported over 300 deaths in flood-affected areas of Baghlan province. Hundreds of people have been injured and missing, mainly children and women. The program has also stated that as a result of recent floods in Baghlan, around a thousand residential homes have been destroyed.

 

The United Nations agency has announced on its page that it is distributing emergency food aid (biscuits) to flood survivors in Baghlan province.

 

However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Majidi has told the media that 130 people have died and over a hundred others have been injured as a result of floods in this province.

 

Simultaneously with Baghlan, provinces such as Badakhshan, Samangan, Jowzjan, and Takhar in the north, and Herat, Nimroz, Ghor, and Badghis provinces in the west of the country have also witnessed devastating floods in recent days, resulting in dozens of deaths and extensive financial damages to the people.

 

Local Taliban officials in the mentioned provinces have said that as a result of ongoing floods caused by rainfall in Takhar, 20 people have died, 15 are missing, and dozens of residential homes have been destroyed. According to officials, floods in Badakhshan have also claimed at least one life and destroyed 55 residential homes and dozens of agricultural lands.

 

However, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government spokesman, said last night on X Network that hundreds of people have been killed and injured as a result of floods in Baghlan, Badakhshan, Ghor, and Herat provinces, writing: “The Ministry of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Interior have been ordered to use all their resources as quickly as possible to rescue people, retrieve the martyrs, and treat the injured.”

 

The Taliban government spokesman has also urged people to hasten to help flood victims.

 

Abdul Ghani Baradar, the deputy economic minister of the Taliban government, has convened an emergency meeting to coordinate assistance to flood victims in Baghlan, Ghor, Badakhshan, Faryab, and Takhar provinces.

 

On the other hand, Mirwais Azizi, Afghan traders residing in Dubai, has announced that he will assist the affected people of Baghlan with 50 million Afghanis. He added that a team from Azizi Group (his company) will be dispatched to Baghlan to identify and assess the needs of the affected.

 

It is worth mentioning that the Afghanistan Meteorological Department has reported the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and floods in Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Panjshir, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, and Nangarhar provinces in the north and east of the country tomorrow (Monday, 22nd of Sawr).
