Detention of girls in Kabul is “psychological torture and organized repression of women”
The Global Network for the Support of Afghan Women has reacted to the detention of women and young girls in Kabul, saying that this action by the Taliban is imposing their “reactionary ideology through intimidation, psychological torture and organized repression.”
The organization has issued a statement saying that the detention of girls on charges of “not wearing a hijab” is not based on any of the accepted “Shariah, legal and international” standards.
The Global Network for the Support of Afghan Women has called for an end to this action, the unconditional release of the detained girls, the creation of global pressure on the Taliban to respect human rights, and the prosecution of Taliban leaders on charges of human rights violations.
Part of the statement reads: “What has happened in recent days in Kabul and other cities of Afghanistan is not just a violation of human rights, but a systematic attack on human dignity and a clear political crime against Afghan women.”
The network has emphasized that the “arbitrary” arrests are a violation of UN human rights conventions and reflect the Taliban’s “chronic fear” of informed, independent, and resilient women.
These criticisms and reactions have been raised after the Taliban arrested a number of women, especially young girls, from several parts of Kabul in recent weeks on charges of “not wearing the hijab.”
