CNN: US aid cuts threaten the lives of thousands of Afghan children and women
In the latest case, CNN reported that the US humanitarian aid cuts, especially in the health sector, have endangered the lives of thousands of children and women in Afghanistan and brought the country’s health system to the brink of collapse.
CNN published a report on Tuesday (July 11) that the network’s reporters witnessed the death of a one-year-old child while attending the Nangarhar Provincial Hospital.
The report states that child mortality has increased significantly due to a lack of medicine, doctors, and food in this medical center.
Based on this report, doctors at the Nangarhar Provincial Hospital said that after the US aid was cut, the child mortality rate in this health center has increased by 3 to 4 percent.
It is worth noting that the United States previously paid for the hospital’s health services and doctors’ salaries, but with the cessation of aid, patients have been forced to pay for their own medicines, which is not possible for many families.
The report states that the cutoff of $1.7 billion in US aid has disrupted not only public health, but also education, mine clearance, women’s empowerment, and agricultural projects. Women in particular have been hit hardest by this situation.
While US Republicans are calling for a complete halt to aid to Afghanistan, saying that this aid is going to the Taliban, monitoring organizations emphasize that the Taliban’s contribution has been negligible and that the cutoff of aid has had serious humanitarian consequences.
