Women activists meet with Bennett: The situation of women under Taliban rule has worsened
A number of women’s rights and human rights activists met with Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, and expressed concern over the efforts of a number of countries to recognize and expand interaction with the Taliban.
The Coordination Association of Afghan Women Activist wrote in a press release on Monday (July 13) that the meeting took place in Berlin, Germany, and that various issues were discussed during the meeting, such as the situation of women in Afghanistan, the situation of Afghan women in Iran and Pakistan, especially violence and mistreatment in Iran, and the efforts of some countries to recognize the Taliban without considering the human rights situation under the rule of this group.
The press release states that members of the Coordination Association of Afghan Women Activist, in a conversation with the UN Special Rapporteur, said that the situation of women and girls under the rule of the Taliban is deteriorating every day.
They also expressed concern about the international community’s approach to engaging with the Taliban, saying that despite the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan, Russia has recognized the Taliban government.
These human rights activists also emphasized that in addition to the poor conditions women in Afghanistan face, they also face “discrimination, insecurity, and the threat of deportation” in neighboring countries, especially Iran.
The press release states: “The experience of Afghan women in neighboring countries, especially Iran, is full of discrimination, insecurity, and the threat of deportation. Despite all the pressures, these women are trying to survive in exile because returning to them means the end of hope and freedom.”
These concerns are raised as the Taliban rule in Afghanistan approaches its fourth anniversary, and during this period, extensive restrictions have been imposed and implemented on women and girls.
On the other hand, demands and concerns about the human rights situation have remained unanswered by the Taliban. The group claims to ensure human rights in accordance with “Islamic law” and does not accept any demands to change its approach.
