UN: We are witnessing the institutionalization of the most extreme forms of gender discrimination in Afghanistan

The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada al-Nashif, has recently announced that the most extreme forms of gender discrimination are being institutionalized in Afghanistan.
Ms. al-Nashif made these statements yesterday (Monday, 16 June) at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council and said that women have been completely excluded from social life.
She emphasized: “Women and girls are deprived of their most basic rights, including education, work and health services.”
The UN official also noted in part of her speech that women’s access to justice has become very difficult and they are targeted based on ethnicity, religion and gender.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has also warned about the exclusion of women from society by the Taliban.
At this meeting, representatives from more than 10 countries condemned the restrictions imposed by the Taliban and called for the group to be held accountable.
