Taliban Flog 9 People in Three Provinces
The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced the public flogging of nine individuals in the provinces of Sar-e Pol, Ghazni, and Laghman. These individuals were punished on charges such as gambling, illicit relationships, and theft.
According to a statement from the court, on Monday May 26, five individuals in Sayad District of Sar-e Pol Province were convicted of “gambling” and each sentenced to 15 lashes and two months and twenty days of imprisonment.
In two separate statements, the Taliban Supreme Court reported that in Ghazni Province, two people were sentenced to 39 lashes each on charges of “illicit relationships” and “theft” in the districts of Muqur and Waghaz. One of them was also sentenced to six months and the other to five years of imprisonment.
Additionally, two individuals were flogged in Qarghayi District of Laghman Province on charges of “theft.” According to the court, each received 39 lashes and was sentenced to one year of imprisonment.
Since returning to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly carried out punishments such as public flogging. They have also executed at least ten individuals in public so far.
International human rights organizations consider corporal punishment and public executions to be violations of international law and human dignity, and have repeatedly called for an end to such practices.
