Taliban Ministry Warns Social Media Users of Legal Action Over “Immoral” Content

The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has issued a warning that social media users will face legal consequences if they engage in what it calls “illegitimate” or immoral activity online.

Saif al-Islam Khaybar, spokesperson for the ministry, delivered the message in an audio statement broadcast on Taliban-run national television. He stated that the ministry actively monitors social media platforms.

“Users are not allowed to post or share immoral or illegitimate content,” Saif al-Islam said, adding, “The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue will pursue all accounts that mislead public opinion.”

This comes amid ongoing concerns about Taliban crackdowns on freedom of expression. Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has repeatedly detained and tortured critics who voiced dissent on social media platforms.

Human rights organizations have consistently condemned the Taliban’s restrictions on media and online speech.
