UNAMA Calls for Environmental Protection in Afghanistan
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), on the occasion of Earth Day, called on citizens and governing authorities to take immediate action to protect the country’s environment.
On Tuesday, April 22, UNAMA released a video on Facebook warning that unsustainable policies, pollution, and lack of public awareness have accelerated environmental degradation in Afghanistan.
The UN office emphasized that widespread deforestation in recent years has destroyed Afghanistan’s natural vegetation.
According to UNAMA, Afghanistan is facing serious regional climate change challenges, including the drying up of rivers and springs. This situation has worsened the water crisis in the country and affected the lives of millions of people.
In the video released by UNAMA, it is stated that rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and environmental pressures have made life extremely difficult for people across Afghanistan. Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods have also caused significant damage to vulnerable communities.
UNAMA stated that these challenges have put pressure on farmers, increased poverty, and pushed Afghanistan’s fragile ecosystem to the brink of collapse.
UNAMA stressed that it is time to support reforestation programs, manage water resources sustainably, and find smart solutions to tackle climate change.
In its message, UNAMA emphasized that protecting the environment essentially means safeguarding the security of the people and future generations of the country. The organization called on Afghan citizens to contribute to environmental preservation by planting trees and reducing plastic use.
