UN Requests $400 Million to Support Returnees from Pakistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that more than $400 million in funding is needed in 2025 to address the needs of Afghan returnees.

In a statement published on Facebook today (Wednesday, May 7), UNAMA stated that the requested amount falls under the framework of the “Integrated Response Plan” to address the crisis of Afghan migrants returning from Pakistan next year.

According to the details released, $64 million of the total will be allocated for emergency assistance at border crossings, while the remaining $350 million is designated to support 600,000 returnees and affected communities in rebuilding their lives.

UNAMA emphasized that the plan has been developed by the UN and NGOs, focusing on immediate relief, medium-term support, and promoting sustainable reintegration of returnees into their communities.

The agency called on donors to invest not only in immediate humanitarian aid but also in long-term capacity building to break the cycle of displacement and instability.

The UN also warned that the process of deporting Afghan migrants from Pakistan, which began on April 1, 2025, is expected to continue until the end of December this year.
